Switching Swiss Health Insurance for 2027: The November Deadline Checklist

Switching Swiss basic health insurance for January 2027? Your current insurer must receive your cancellation by 30 November 2026. Start with a comparison, send the cancellation with delivery evidence, and check that the new insurer confirms uninterrupted cover.

The cheapest quote can look convincing until you discover that your usual doctor is outside the chosen model. This guide helps you compare the price and the way you will actually obtain care, then finish the switch without leaving paperwork unresolved.

What the deadline actually means

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) says insurers must notify members of next year’s premium by 31 October. The November deadline is based on receipt, rather than the postmark. It recommends sending written cancellation by registered mail or A-Post Plus by mid-November. The new insurer must also confirm continuity to you and the old insurer. Relevant unpaid amounts can prevent a switch. See FOPH: premiums, switching deadlines and costs.

For 2026, 30 November falls on a Monday. Build in time for delivery problems and missing information. A letter sent on the final day creates avoidable uncertainty.

Build a like-for-like comparison

Check What to compare
Person and address Correct date of birth, postcode and premium region for each family member
Annual premium Twelve monthly premiums for the same deductible and accident setting
Access to care Named practice, phone or digital first contact, referrals and exceptions
Payment process Who receives invoices, when you must pay and how reimbursements work
Separate products Supplementary cover retained, discounts affected and cancellation terms

Use the official Priminfo: official Swiss health-insurance premium calculator calculator as your starting point. Save the comparison with its date. A screenshot of an attractive premium is less useful than a record of the actual inputs and selected product.

A five-step switching workflow

  1. Collect the documents. Find the current basic policy, new premium notice, any outstanding invoices and separate supplementary contracts.
  2. Check practical fit. Confirm that your intended doctor or first-contact service is available. Ask how ongoing specialist treatment transfers to the new model.
  3. Apply and cancel in parallel. The FOPH advises applying to the new insurer without waiting for the old insurer’s cancellation acknowledgement. Identify the basic policy explicitly.
  4. Keep a switching file. Save the application, cancellation, delivery evidence, acknowledgements and new policy. Resolve discrepancies promptly.
  5. Check the January setup. Confirm the start date, deductible, accident setting, payment instructions and insurance card. Tell relevant healthcare providers which insurer applies.

Example: the cheapest quote is not always the simplest choice

Imagine a Geneva resident comparing two hypothetical quotes: CHF 390 and CHF 425 per month. The first saves CHF 420 over a year. However, it requires a particular first-contact route, while the second permits the resident’s preferred arrangement.

The decision is whether the CHF 420 saving is worth the actual restrictions. Write down how you would book your next consultation, obtain a referral and deal with an evening problem. If that process is unclear, ask the insurer before signing. These example premiums are illustrative, not market quotes.

Separate basic acceptance from supplementary underwriting

For eligible applicants, basic insurers cannot reject cover because of health or impose a medical waiting period. Supplementary insurers can assess health and refuse an application. That distinction comes from the FOPH: compulsory insurance and acceptance rules guidance.

Keep supplementary decisions in a separate file. Do not cancel an existing supplementary policy until replacement acceptance and its conditions are confirmed in writing. A successful basic-insurance application does not confirm hospital, dental or other supplementary benefits.

Save a comparison card for each person

Use one row per quote, with these fields: insurer and product; monthly premium × 12; deductible; accident cover included or excluded; required first contact; access to your doctor; and the documents still outstanding.

If an option saves CHF 35 per month, that is CHF 420 per year. Ask whether its care route would work for you and whether the deductible changes the comparison. A premium saving and an annual-cost saving are different calculations.

Before closing the file, record four dates: application sent, cancellation received, replacement acceptance confirmed and new cover starting. Keep the confirmation documents beside the comparison. If a date or acceptance is missing, that is the next action.

Questions people ask before switching

Must the premium increase before I can use the November deadline?

No. The annual switching route applies following notification of the new premium even if your individual premium has not increased.

Does a new application automatically cancel my old policy?

Do not assume it does. Keep evidence that the cancellation was delivered and that the new insurer confirmed continuity.

Can family members choose different insurers?

Compare each person separately. A household-wide decision should still reflect each member’s needs, administration and any contractual bundle effects.

Your next useful action

Create one row per insured person with the current policy, selected replacement, cancellation delivery date and confirmation status. That simple record makes a complicated household switch much easier to control.
