Having the right car or motorcycle insurance policy in place will provide you with the financial protection in the event of an incident which causes damage to you or the other driver.

What are the different policies and what do they cover?

Car or motorcycle insurance generally comes under two forms of cover, third party and comprehensive.

Third party insurance is mandatory if you use a car or motorcycle in Switzerland. Third party policies will cover you for damage to others as a result of an accident that’s your fault. Damage to your car is not covered by third party car insurance. Nor does it cover theft of your car.

Comprehensive insurance will protect you from accidental damages caused by yourself or others and also cover for fire, theft, vandalism, windscreen repair or replacement cover. Generally comprehensive car insurance will cover you for a wide range of damages, injuries and loss to your passengers, your vehicle, and other property.

Which policy is best for me?

Car and motorcycle insurance needs vary and no two drivers are the same.

Comprehensive cover tends to be the best option, providing peace of mind and security against most accidents or mishaps. However these policies can cost more than Third party cover.

Third party cover is usually the most cost effective choice, but you might want to consider the expenses you would face if you got into an accident that wasn’t your fault or if your car is stolen. The lower premium therefore doesn’t always justify the loss in cover that you would get with comprehensive cover.
